A good early cast circa 1910 of Charles Valton's Lioness and Two Cubs, it is a beautifully detailed sand-casting with a rich red-oxide and medium-brown surface patination that highlights the texture of the surface. The two cubs sit at total peace beneath their powerful mother, her head lowered in a low growl as she likely threatens a fellow lion away from the meal of rabbit she has brought for her cubs.

An exquisite and rare example of Paul Philippe's Mischievous finished in a brilliant polychromed gilt, the young woman grabs her reddish-brown hair in hand while looking off into the corner with a sly look in her eyes that suggests she holds a secret that we will never know. The base signature is captured directly from the mold. Situated over its original faceted base. A very fine work.
ARTIST
Born in Thorn in Poland in 1870, Paul Philippe studied under Antonin Larroux at the École des Beaux-Arts after moving to Paris, France around 1900. He exhibited extensively at all of the major French salons and developed his own voice in sculpture by focusing his ouevre around the movement of the female body, often depicting exotic models in highly theatrical poses with a loose adherence to realism in his idealized visions. He walked a fine line between Art Nouveau and Art Deco while his figures do tend towards the latter. He executed figures in bronze and chryselephantine and worked with some of the best foundries in France and Germany. Many examples of his work are held in the Art Deco Museum in Moscow, Russia.

A very fine lifetime casting of Charles Korschann's Putto Riding a Doe, the model is steeped in the elements of the Art Nouveau with a distinct celebration of the naturalistic. The putto grasps a simple harp in his hand while a loose garment bound in a belt encircling his waist billows in the unseen wind. The doe looks on with disinterest, unconcerned about its surroundings and almost at one with its rider. It is a carefully composed idealization of the natural world and the potential for harmony between man and beast. The casting is exquisite, typical of work from Louchet, and is finished in a medium-brown translucent patina.
Charles Korschann
Born in Brno, Monrovia in 1872 as Charles Korschmann, later dropping the "m" to appear less Germanic, he studied at the fine arts academies of Vienna, Berlin and Paris before finally establishing himself in Paris in 1894. He spent his entire career working in Paris, exhibiting at the 1900 Exposition Universelle where he was awarded a Bronze Medal and from 1894 through 1905 at the Société des Artistes Français.
His work is very distinctive and immediately recognizable, a most important trait as an artist and a particular accomplishment in light of the output of his contemporaries. He was to sculpture what Alphonse Mucha was to graphics, both men originating from the same province in Czechoslovakia and having similar influences in Paris. It is rather fitting that he would execute a bust of Alphonse Mucha for the Museum of Brno in honor of his accomplishments.

A charming bust of a young maiden entitled Cendrillon (Cinderella), it is executed in the lost-wax method in a single piece with an integral socle that is titled in raised relief. The young woman is serious in her composure with a quiet strength, her eyes slightly downcast in the clothing of a common girl, her diaphonous garment sliding off one shoulder while the overall sculpture remains chaste and elusive. The surface is finished in a two-toned patina, the reddish-oxide surface being utilized for the flesh tones and a darker brown for the base and garments. Casting from the second quarter of the 20th century.
ARTIST
Born in Lille, France, little is known about the life of Emmanuel Villanis, despite the fact that he has a simply incredible level of output during the years of 1880-1920. First exhibiting at Salon in 1886, he went on to exhibit nearly five-hundred models, almost exclusively featuring the female form with strong influence of the Art Nouveau movement evident in every aspect of his work. He received honorable mention at the 1889 Exposition Universelle, Paris.

An exquisite and very rare casting of an Aberdeen-Angus bull, an unusual and distinctive breed of cattle from Scotland, this sculpture by Isidore Jules Bonheur is almost without a doubt cast by the foundry of his brother-in-law Hippolyte Peyrol and a rather early model as well in light of the distinctive construction method. In her text on the selection of 46 animal bronzes in the collection of the Georgia Museum of Art, Eleanor Luciano notes regarding this model that "Bonheur is never recorded to have been to Scotland, where he would have seen this unusual breed. Rosa Bonheur painted in Scotland, and its seems likely that Isidore would have drawn the idea for this bull either from one of her sketches or from an agricultural show in France. The animal's rich mane and strong modeling make this one of the most successful." Notable is the very fine surface patination which exhibits a glassy finish with a complex range of colors presenting in the body of the bull, overall being medium brown but augmented with an underlying reddish hue against auburn highlights. The base is signed "I. BONHEUR" in the typical manner.

A very fine evening piece with an open wire-work display of branches bound with white gold ribbons, the branches set with ten diamonds and the ribbons set with twelve diamonds. This is affixed over a flexible body of composed of rose and yellow gold oval links and is finished in a fine concealed pressure clasp a wire safety catch and also a safety chain. Flashy and unusual, this is an absolutely gorgeous statement piece.

This lovely early 19th century Regency chiffonier cabinet features a rosewood veneer over all primary surfaces and is hung with original bronze mounts throughout. The pair of locking doors feature original latticework brass grillwork and they open to reveal an upholstered interior with two fixed shelves. The top raises an upper shelf on turned pillars, the rosewood shelf with a pierced bronze gallery surrounding the back and sides.
