Borrowing from the Japanese concept of wabi-sabi (the acceptance of transience and imperfection), the work reflects aspects of duality in nature such as feminine and masculine or light and dark.
Cast from triangular fragments of charred wood, the transformative character of the source material is preserved in black patinated bronze. The Todd Merrill custom originals tufted sectional is an elegant, comfortable and versatile seating group available on a commission order basis. The double is the tallest style available, featuring a unique double tufted layered back.
Each square section, available in ottoman, single-back and corner styles, is sold individually in order to allow clients to create their ideal bespoke seating group. Custom dimensionality, fabric, finishes, gilding, and extras including casters and hardware, may all be accommodated. The sections may be assembled together on a continuous base to form one sofa, or be rendered separately with optional connectors, allowing for adjustable placement and various configurations, such as chaise lounges, L-shaped sofas, and beds. The sectional’s base is available in polished chromed steel, brass, bronze, wood, or lacquer. Special lacquer requirements may be accommodated at an additional cost.
Todd Merrill’s Custom Original creations are based on his vast experience with 20th century design and his penchant for producing unique, elegant, and versatile furniture. Merrill supervises the production of every item made at the finest local workshops whose master craftsmen implement state-of-the-art techniques. The frames are made of solid hardwood and steel. The tufting is deep and very comfortable with multiple layers of foam added for maximum support and cushioning.
