Antique Victorian Sterling Silver, '10th Royal Hussars Officer Busby' Inkwell
By Edward H. Stockwell
Located in Jesmond, Newcastle Upon Tyne
A magnificent, fine and impressive, large and unusual antique Victorian sterling silver inkwell modelled in the form of an officer's busby of the 10th Royal Hussars; an addition to our military related silverware collection.
This magnificent and unusual, antique Victorian English gilded sterling silver inkwell has been realistically modelled in the form of an officer busby/headdress of the 10th Royal Hussars.
This main body of the inkwell is modelled in the form of a helmet/headdress embellished with chased decoration replicating the details of the black fur, in addition to an embossed and chased oval gold gimp spiral cord style cockade to the anterior surface of the upper portion.
The helmet is encompassed with a swag band of cord ornamentation, cascading from the cover and continuing across the body.
This impressive headdress is surmounted with a magnificent cast sterling silver acanthus leaf plume holder and plume reflecting the naturalistic details of the egret feathers; on the functional helmet this was erected from the posterior of the aforementioned cockade/boss.
The hallmarked hinged cover opens to allow access to the double skinned interior and original removable glass liner.
The cover of this antique silver inkwell includes an impressive 'coloured' cloth bag covering the top of the head piece and falling down the side, continuing past the rim.
This bag is ornamented with further gold gimp style cord details in addition to a secondary boss to the lower rounded portion.
The lower portion of the headdress bears the original cast and applied sterling silver gilt textured curb chain...
