Early 20th Century 2-Tier Cabinet From Fujian, China
About the Item
An early 20th century 2-tier carved cabinet from Fujian province, specifically Quanzhou city, China. There is nice combination of through and relief carvings throughout this cabinet, and it is decorated with many auspicious symbols like the phoenix, peonies, lions and magpies. The colours on this piece are original and no lacquer have been applied onto it, and the brass handles are also old. It is made of Fir wood, with the carved portions made from Camphor wood.
Some small bits of the old carvings have fallen out and those parts have been replaced. The cabinet consists of two tiers with the bottom tier at 74cm tall.
In the past it was common for people to keep their valuables at home, and secret compartments in furniture was one way to protect their valuable possessions against theft. See video for the location of the secret compartment of this cabinet.
