About

A fine example of a late 18th century Empire marble and gilt bronze clock after a model by Deverberie. The 5.75?dial signed Paris, sits on an open patinated bronze plinth adorned with a central gilt wreath; and flanked with vertical floral decorations, the dial surmounted with a basket of flowers flanked by trailing garlands. The bronze frame sitting on four large lion feet on a further green marble base having a large rectangular gilded frieze. A highly decorative gilded pendulum showing butterflies swings between the large open central gilded wreath. Jean Simon Deverberie (1764-1824) was one of the most important Parisian bronziers of the late 18th century. Deverberie is listed from 1798 to 1823 in the Paris Trade Almanac at 483 rue Barbette in the Marais district, at the time occupied by a population of artisans and workers. From the digital library of the French Institut National d'Histoire d'Art, this clock case model is shown on an engraving sourced from Deverberie's so called 'catalogue de vente'.
