Wedgwood Pale Blue Jasperware Coffee Cup and Saucer

About the Item

Crafted by Wedgwood, this exquisite and rare assembled coffee cup and saucer set are comprised of the firm’s famous pale “Wedgwood blue” jasperware so prized by collectors and connoisseurs alike. A foliate motif of stiff leaves decorate both the cup and saucer in relief, creating a bold white cameo effect characteristic to the English firm’s style. The firm’s characteristically unglazed matte “biscuit” stoneware finish was first developed in a spectrum of colors by Wedgwood founder Josiah Wedgwood in the 1770s. However, the pale blue hue exhibited in these pieces was the firm’s most popular ever produced, earning itself the nickname “Wedgwood blue.” Circa 1790 Both pieces stamped "WEDGWOOD" Measures: 5 1/8" wide x 5 1/8" deep x 2 5/8" high Provenance: The Starr Collection.
