Pollaro Fan-Patterned Straw Marquetry Screen after Jean-Michel Frank

About the Item

A four-paneled screen in the Art Deco style. Handmade by Pollaro artisans. Straw marquetry on a hand polished solid walnut base. Straw marquetry is the art of forming a decorative panel using flattened slithers of natural cured straw, similar to that of wood marquetry. To mimic the varying shades of wood veneer, wheat or oat straw must be split, flattened, softened, and scraped or ironed into a flat ribbon. The resulting material possesses a variety of tones, from pale gold to deepest dark brown. It is then inlaid edge-to-edge until the surface is covered. This labor-intensive process that can take months to complete. This piece represents over 250 hours of handwork. This piece is available immediately as shown; additional custom screens may also be commissioned to order.
