Bloch Chairs by Sergio Rodrigues, Brazilian Midcentury Design, 1964

About the Item

A particular characteristic in Brazilian mid-century furniture making was the practice of furnishing houses and commercial buildings in exchange for a special commission. This chair was created in 1964 by Sergio Rodrigues (1927-2014) for BLOCH EDITORES S.A. BUILDING, a Brazilian publisher founded in 1952 and closed in 2000, where Rodrigues and Joaquim Tenreiro furnished the interiors. This piece was designed to have back large seats and backrests, respecting Rodrigues' furniture tradition: comfort. The chairs present structures made of gorgeous Brazilian Rosewood in diverse tones and a patrimony metal tag with identification numbers. Sergio Rodrigues was responsible for establishing a new paradigm in Brazilian design, setting himself apart from his very own language in his quest for a recognizable Brazilian identity.
