About the Item

A stunning miniature portrait with breathtaking artistry and a fine 18k gold mount, this young man comes to us from France and is either backed by or painted directly on a mother of pearl wafer (visible from backside). This is something done to add an extra lustre to the portrait, and we do see it in some of the early French paintings. We bought this in companionship with a similarly painted miniature of a beautiful young French woman, and suspect they are the couple's wedding portraits. They are being sold separately. The gentleman is handsomely dressed and we get a glimpse of the attire of 1811, which is the date the artist has noted next to his or her signature. Yes, this one is artist signed, though I can't make it out so have not researched it. If you experts out there recognize the artist's name and style, please email us with that information and we'll add to our listing. With such fine portraiture, we know this was done by a very adept artist, though I can't read the signature so can't tell you more about this artist. We did not try to open this painting, but just scanned through the glass that protects it from harm. The frame is 18k yellow gold, tested and guaranteed. Dating c. 1811, he is magnificent after his 201 years, isn't he! Very good to excellent condition, no chips or cracks or hairlines on the painted wafer. One very very tiny flake of paint showing from his hair at forehead, exposing the wafer beneath. A wonderful chain-link solid gold border of this elegant 18k gold brooch mount, and no flaws that stands out. Certainly a superb artist's rendition of an elite member of French heritage, and a lingering treasure of museum quality.
