Antique Hand Painted Portrait Miniature Gold Brooch with Rose Cut Diamond Border

About the Item

I'm delighted to offer a very lovely antique portrait miniature brooch, surrounded by glittering rose cut diamonds. Crafted of gold testing around 15K, the round brooch features a hand painted portrait of a Georgian woman with kind brown eyes wearing a white gown. The border around the portrait is completely encircled with tiny old rose cut diamonds; the reverse has a long gold pin stem and old "c" style clasp. Beautiful as a brooch, I think she would also be wonderful worn as a pendant. It was challenging to capture the subtle coloring and nuances of the portrait painting, but I did the best I could. (the colors might look a little different on your screen, than it does on mine) I really love the woman's sweet - perhaps a little pensive - expression. Her face is very finely rendered. There is some wear, and what appears to be a hairline crack towards the left side of the painting. Fortunately, it completely misses the figure. I'm not certain what the portrait is painted on - the backing of the brooch is mother-of-pearl, which I think was likely replaced many years ago, along with the glazing, which I don't believe is original. (glazing shows light wear) The gorgeous rose cut diamonds are original, and of fine quality with a lovely shimmer & sparkle to them. I noticed one chip under magnification - the diamonds show very little wear and are still in very good antique condition. Measuring approximatley 1 1/16 inches in diameter (26.5 mm) not including the pin stem that extends beyond, the brooch is a really nice size. Not the tiny ones I sometimes see, and not so large that she is hard to wear. On my scale, the finished weight is 6.55 grams. On the reverse is the original working pin stem and "c" style clasp. There are three areas along the back of the gold inner edge that have old repairs - I believe this is from when the mother-of-pearl backing was replaced. While the piece looks much like a Georgian era brooch, I suspect it dates to the 1850's, as that was when 15K gold started being used in England. There is a small stamped number on the back gold rim of "502" and the worn letters of "UTT." Possibly there was an old inscription.
