About the Item
Offered is a very lovely antique rose cut diamond heart brooch from the Georgian period. This type of heart is referred to as a "witch's heart" with the open style and the point curving to the right. It was a sentimental piece given to a beloved, signifying being "bewitched" by love. It's wonderful as a pin but would also make a delightful pendant, should you wish to convert it.
Made of silver and gold with a base metal pin stem, the brooch features 36 very sparkly old rose cut diamonds, each set in their own little closed back silver settings. Of fine quality (especially for rose cuts of the period), the diamonds appear to be original to the piece and remain in really good condition - I see only one small stone showing damage under magnification. With close examination one can see a little warmth which is due to discoloration of some of the foil backs of the diamonds. (it's more noticeable in my macro photos than to the unaided eye & does not at all detract from the great sparkle of the stones) The silver settings show some expected wear, but overall look good for their age.
Not too small, nor too large, the heart measures a little over 7/8 x a little under 3/4 of an inch. (24.5 x 17.2 mm) On my scale, it weighs 2.22 grams.
The original "c" style clasp and pin are in very good condition and operate as they should.
It's sweet to imagine this lover's gift presented through the years; now it's ready for a new home.
