A large silk square/head scarf, 'The Swarm Of Cherubs', Vivienne Westwood, 1980s

About the Item

For this scarf design, Vivienne Westwood borrowed a detail from J.H. Fragonard's painting a 'Swarm of Cherubs' to create an ornate and Baroque head scarf. Designed in 1991, it is made from beautiful ivory silk with a screen printed image in one corner, framed in a heavy gilt design incorporating the VW orb and logo - it is a rare piece, beautifully expressing her romanticism for women and her unique design and imagery at this time. For well over three decades, Vivienne Westwood, along with her one-time partner, Malcom Mclaren, has been at the centre of British fashion and one of its most inventive and influential designers. Westwood’s career in fashion was galvanised by Mclaren, and together they launched memorable fashion moments, including punk in the early 1970s, and later, their ‘Pirates’ collection. Mclaren and Westwood conducted a design relationship between 1971 and 1983. In 1990, and again in 1991, Vivienne Westwood was named Designer of the Year; she has also received and OBE and is now a Dame of the British Empire.
