1960s Oscar de la Renta Silk Brocade Purple Emerald Metallic Belt Maxi Dress

Oscar de la Renta spent a lifetime manipulating luscious fabrics into lavish evening dresses. Frequently seen on the red carpet, de la Renta dresses run the gamut from staid to experimental. This high gloss dress from the 1960s sparkles like midnight with amethyst purple and emerald green brocaded silk. The simplicity of the jewel neckline and bodice give the smoothly set-in sleeves much deserved attention. The brocade, which incorporates metallized yarns, adds body to the full style lines of the sleeves. Volume is further accentuated by the close fit of the buttoned cuff. A maxi skirt falls in soft gathers from the waistline, forming a silhouette that is full without excessiveness. The dress is fully lined in purple satin, and has a hand-set center-back zipper. The wide waist sash, which comes elegantly to a point at both ends, is completely separate from the dress, leaving your options open for styling. Size estimate: S/M Measurements: Shoulders: 14.5 inches Sleeve length: 24 inches Bust: 37 inches Waist: 29inches: Hips: up to 38 inches Bodice: 16 inches Skirt length: 41 inches Total dress length: 58 inches This vintage Oscar de la Renta maxi dress is in excellent condition. Made from jacquard woven silk, the bold geometric pattern reads as a subtle textural difference. Featuring a close neckline, voluminous sleeves, and a green waist sash, the dress is full length with pockets hidden in the side seams. Fitted sleeve cuffs each have two hidden fabric buttons for closure. Fully lined in a silky purple rayon, de la Renta’s dress opens at center back with a hand-set painted zipper. Professionally cleaned and pressed. High-quality vintage pieces like this are yours to live in and love while increasing in value every year. It’s never too soon to start collecting them, as an investment in your wardrobe—and in yourself.

About Oscar De La Renta (Manufacturer)

Oscar de la Renta was not just a designer for the ages but a designer for women of all ages — from Hollywood starlets to silver-haired doyennes, from fashion icons (Sarah Jessica Parker) to iconic brides (Amal Alamuddin Clooney), from leading ladies of hip-hop (Nicki Minaj) to First Ladies of the United States (Jacqueline Kennedy all the way through to Michelle Obama). The secret to his broad and enduring appeal? “I have always thought that my role as a designer is to do the very best I can for a woman,” de la Renta told 1stdibs in a 2010 profile.

And for de la Renta, doing the very best meant making a woman feel beautiful, glamorous and full of confidence, whether she was walking down the red carpet or a crowded city street. "You carry the clothes, the clothes don't carry you," he went on to say in our story.

A perennial favorite on 1stdibs, Oscar de la Renta designs evolved over the years, as the large selection of items below attests, but whether bolero or ball gown, vintage or current, the pieces exude elegant sophistication and enduring originality — much like the man himself.
