About the Item
These pieces are labeled “Oscar de la Renta,” who designed them for one of his most discerning clients of the 1980’s. This was the era when he was also the designer for the prestigious haute couture house of Balmain in Paris. The French influence and attention to detail is unmistakable in the design and manufacture of these remarkable pieces.
Red and Black Heavily Embellished Velvet Toreador Jacket with Complementary Patterned Ball Skirt
This sumptuous ensemble consists of a black velvet Toreador Jacket heavily embellished with masterful red embroidery and beading, and a full, petticoated ball skirt of duchesse satin intarsia woven in an amplified-scale black and red foliate pattern.
The jacket is the showstopper here, designed with leg-o-mutton sleeves which narrow from elbow to wrist. It has a jewel neckline, narrowing at the waist and flaring slightly to a short peplum just above the hips. It is secured by five hook/eye closures, but could also be revealingly worn with a bustier underneath to fetching effect.
The embroidery on the velvet is rendered in various textures of bright red, with a few complementary grey and black outlines for added effect. Small silk knots, silk chenille roping, minute red beading, delicate sequin tracery interplay in a William Morris-style pattern of ribbons and leaves that is echoed in the pattern of the skirt. The shoulders and upper sleeves are the focus of the piece, with heavy embellishment drawing the eye to the face of the wearer. The jacket is edged in a simplified tracery of red and black embroidery and beading, and the piece is finished with a charming black bead tassel that typifies the surprise elegance of the piece.
The very full dirndl -style skirt has a “shot silk” effect of changing color with movement and light, the reds alternating from bright to dark and the blacks glowing to a deep midnight. This adds to the overall charm of the skirt and keeps from weighing the eye down with the strong pattern. It has a gorgeous black silk petticoat attached that is edge in a stiff lace ruffle to keep the skirt away from the body and amplify the grand effect.
This is a major ensemble for a major entrance down a sweeping staircase. It would be perfect for an opera opening, major gala, or for a guest at a white-tie wedding.

Oscar De La Renta
Oscar de la Renta was not just a designer for the ages but a designer for women of all ages — from Hollywood starlets to silver-haired doyennes, from fashion icons (Sarah Jessica Parker) to iconic brides (Amal Alamuddin Clooney), from leading ladies of hip-hop (Nicki Minaj) to First Ladies of the United States (Jacqueline Kennedy all the way through to Michelle Obama). The secret to his broad and enduring appeal? “I have always thought that my role as a designer is to do the very best I can for a woman,” de la Renta told 1stDibs in a 2010 profile.
And for de la Renta, doing the very best meant making a woman feel beautiful, glamorous and full of confidence, whether she was walking down the red carpet or a crowded city street. "You carry the clothes, the clothes don't carry you," he went on to say in our story.
A perennial favorite on 1stDibs, Oscar de la Renta designs evolved over the years, as the large selection of items below attests, but whether bolero or ball gown, vintage or current, the pieces exude elegant sophistication and enduring originality — much like the man himself.
