Piggy Bank Grand Tour / Objet de vertu, s. XIX Italy
Beautiful and special piggy bank Italy around 1890 in the context of the Grand Tour. Made of ebonized wood, with a cylindrical profile with chevrons at the base and top. Enriched with decoration of brass floral garlands, on the envelope or lid and on the front, where there is a hole for the lock (without key). These brass ornaments present in their central field two scenes of Italian architecture, a work of offset under crystal , with a very small scratch. At the top is the opening for the piggy bank itself. It has a small hair on the front, unimportant overall. These pieces purchased as souvenirs in Europe by European and American travelers constitute a style called "The Grand Tour." This tradition dates back to the 18th century, where the most cultured students traveled to different European cities to acquire knowledge and culture. Medals, coins and seals would be ostentatiously displayed in the cabinets and libraries of those travelers; and they served to show the social and aesthetic customs of the time. Collection piece.
