Recognizing the value of carrying a bag without use of her hands, Coco added shoulder straps so that her hands remained free. Like much of Chanel's iconic items, the design is based on her childhood experiences. The burgundy lining that lined the early bags is believed to reflect the color of Coco's Catholic school uniform; the straps reminiscent of the belts that the nuns at the school wore. The quilting believed to be based on the materials worn by the stable boys where Coco rode horses as a girl. Coco added the zipper compartment under the first flap to stash love letters (she was having an affair at the time) and the half moon rear pocket for a place to store extra cash. Originally designed with the Mademoiselle lock (named because Coco was not married), the 2.55 was redesigned by Karl Lagerfeld in the 1980s to include the famous front CC turnlock closure and the signature classic flap was born. (The original 2.55 was reissued in 2005.) The classic flap is as much in style today as it was when first introduced circa 1990.
