Large Italian Straw & Bamboo Novelty Basket Handbag, 1950's

About the Item

This look would be right at home on the Riviera ... an amazing 1950's Italian straw handbag with bamboo handle and raffia decoration. The coral grasscloth body has a straw base and lid with raffia decorated plastic buttons and bells incorporating pastel shades of pinks, blues and greens. The circular lid opens to reveal a roomy red fabric lined interior. It is truly a unique silhouette that would be perfect paired with a sundress, cat eye sunglasses and a wide brim hat. CONDITION The bag is structurally sound and makes a wonderful first impression though there are signs of age and use. The raffia banding around the rim is loose at the front near the closure as shown in photograph 15. There has been some loss of raffia around the plastic decoration with examples shown in photographs 16 and 17. There is a spot of loss to the straw at the left handle, photograph 18, and a few pinholes to the grasscloth body, photograph 19. The interior lining has some flaws including loss of stitching to the interior pocket, please see photographs 12 and 13. It sounds like a laundry list but the flaws really do not detract from this fun and fabulous piece of vintage. MEASUREMENTS The body of the handbag measures 15.5" tall and 22" tall including the upturned handle. It is 15" wide x 8" deep. The handle provides a 6.25" drop.
