The inside of the jar, as well as the bottom, are both enameled in blue color. The vase is from a private collection in Milan, is in good condition and is of Chinese provenance.
Cloisonné, also called Byzantium lustre, is a technique of artistic enamel decoration in which thin wires (filigrees) or laths or small metal (usually copper) partitions, cells or alveoli (called cloisons in French), are soldered or glued to a support plate of the work to be built; then, in the areas surveyed by the metal, enamel is poured, thus obtaining a kind of mosaic whose tesserae are circumscribed exactly by the metal laths. This technique is of the "additive" type of enamel matter on metal.
