Fine Cloisonne Lidded Box, Japan, Meiji Era, with Phoenix Decoration
About the Item
Fine Japanese cloisonne lidded box from the Meiji period. The small box stands on three brass feet. The lid, also made of brass, has a small flower as a handle that is just opening.
The box is richly decorated and finely worked out. A phoenix on a glittering background, foliage and flowers. The can is also well worked out on the underside. A large star with a black background and on it again rankers and highly stylized flowers.
The inside of the box is enamelled in blue. On the side, the tin has a barely visible bump. I marked them on a photo.
Cloisonné is an artisanal technique used in enamel work. For production, thin wires or metal strips are soldered onto a carrier plate and glass beads of different colors are embedded between them. The metal bars separate the individual color fields and prevent the colors from running into each other. The blank is then fired at around 750-800°C, creating a pattern of colored glass on the backing plate.
