16th Century Blue and White Porcelain Vase Decorated with Flowers and Mushroom

About the Item

Ming Dynasty blue and white porcelain vase from the Wan Li period (1563-1620). This vase, drawn with a very free hand, is decorated with a branch of flowering peonies as well as the sacred lingzhi mushroom, which symbolizes long life. The sacred mushroom was a highly popular motif in Chinese art, as it was associated with physical and spiritual strength and longevity. On this piece, the stylized mushroom is growing out of the top band of decoration around the vase's collars and sweeps down near a butterfly. The tree peony, which decorates the other half of the vase's body, was cherished by Chinese artists and poets and considered to be "the king of flowers" and often represents wealth and honor. All in all, a charming and auspicious piece.
