Extrordinary Pair of Japanese Jars with Mythological Scenes as Table Lamps

About the Item

Cylindrical jars glazed with striated colors in the top background. With overall dense raised colorful decoration of a mythological scene with a variety of figures. A prominent figure with monstrous mask and headdress is seated reading from a book, flanked by male figures. Different spirits fill the scenes, one blue, others wrapped in robes. Many smaller gray figures, many in tortured poses, appear below, as if in the underworld. Here and there are applied stone and beaded details for wonderful decoration. With decorative bands above and below and gilt character marks. With brass bases and upper mounts. Measures: H. jars 21", total H. 37 1/2", Diam. jars 5 3/4" Condition: Please see detail photos. There are various acceptable signs of age which include minor acceptable age and use wear including an imperfection like a burn mark to the glaze (Please see all detail photos) mentioned for accuracy as the Pair present exceptionally well.
