Black Ceramic Vase with Oil-Spot Glaze Jian Ware

About the Item

An elegant bulbous vase in classic form, potted from a whitish clay and glazed in a polished black. The oil-spot effect was applied evenly to the black surface, in the typical manner of Jian Ware (Jianzhou Kilns of Fujian Province) of Song dynasty circa 10th-11th century. The vase was of fine condition with an exposed unglazed base and it bears an old paper label from Yamanaka & Co. London. The founder of the Yamanaka & Co was born Adachi Sadajiro in 1866. In 1894, he opened an antique shop in New York City followed by venturing into Boston and Atlantic City in 1899. Benefiting from the success of Japanese art in a series of world expositions starting in 1862, the company created a new market for American and European collectors of Japanese art. In the early 20th century, Yamanaka &Co. started dealing in Chinese art and antiques. Due to the collapse of Qing dynasty and the domestic turmoil in China, large quantities of Chinese antiques came to the market and provided great profit for their business. In 1912, Yamanaka & Co. became the exclusive agent of Prince Kung, among the last of the Ching imperial family. In 1917, it even opened a branch in Beijing. In 1919, the London branch was added to its profile with royal warrants of King George V and Queen Mary. From 1920s on, the company went into a sharp decline due to the domestic natural disasters as well as the Sino-Japanese war, which led to the US-Japan hostility during the Second World War, and ultimately the closure of the company after its asset was frozen, seized and auctioned off at huge discount in 1942. The vase was from a CA collection. It is possible dated from Song Dynasty but it has not been TL tested. There were period revival productions in both Japan (known as Tenmoku) and China, so this piece could be a later production or even Japanese by origin.
