About the Item

This Ming-dynasty (1368-1644) storage jar is attributed to the kilns of Yunnan province, loosely decorated with cobalt underglaze in a manner typical of the region. Dated to the 15th/16th century, the small jar is potted to an ovoid form with a gently tapered base, high shoulders and a short, constrained neck. The shoulders are painted with dark blue cobalt pigments to an abstract floral design of sweeping brushstrokes and "horse eye" spirals. A thin glaze of celadon tone finishes the design, flecked with firing imperfections and softly worn with time. Minor chip to rim.
