About the Item

Designed to hold glowing embers, hibachi vessels were used for cooking or as a source of heat in Japanese homes. Ceramic examples such as this were introduced during the Meiji period (1868-1912) as an alternative to larger, copper-lined wooden hibachi and heavy bronze receptacles. Placed under a low kotatsu table with an open slat top, the hibachi functioned as a grill and created a cozy gathering place for the family. This large, ceramic hibachi dates to the early 20th century and is beautifully glazed in the blue-and-white manner of Arita ware porcelain. Rendered in cobalt blue against a pale blue-grey field, the hibachi is decorated with cascading blossoms and scenic vignettes of birds-and-flowers and idyllic mountain landscapes. Accents of white and unglazed sepia add subtle color to the cool blue design, and intricate borders ring the base and rim, densely patterned with florals, coins and dragons. Grand in scale and heft, the hibachi makes an ideal jardinière or garden planter. Painted mark on exterior attributes the vessel as Arita ware.
