Japanese Prunus And Swift Decorated Plate, Seiji Kaisha Company, Late 19th C

About the Item

A beautiful Japanese plate with lightly fluted edges, decorated with flowering cherry blossom and two swifts in flight. With a vibrant red outer border decorated with flowers. In very good condition with no chips or cracks and minimal wear, dating to the late 19th century and signed to base "Seiji Kaisha". In 1879 Seiji Kaisha (1879 - 1897) or the Pure Water Company, was founded in Arita by Fukaumi Suminosuke, Tezuka Kinosuke, and Tsuji Katsuzo who left the Koransha Company (The Scented Orchid Porcelain Company) where they were partners with Eizaemon Fukagawa, and joined Tokyo potter Kawahara Chujiro to start the Seiji Kaisha Company. Like the Koransha Company, the Seiji Kaisha Company received commissions to provide porcelain for the Imperial court and the Ministry of the imperial Household. The company was founded at a time when the Meiji government was encouraging exports. Seiji Kaisha’s excellent craftsman created porcelain wares that, with the exception of Koransha and Fukagawa, had no serious competitors anywhere. The company won a gold medal at the World's Fair in Amsterdam 1883. The Seiji Kaisha Company with a modern factory produced highly competitive porcelain and dinner wares for the Western market, same as Koransha. The commonly found information that the company was only in business for 4 years (1879-1883) has been countered in modern Japanese texts. The company did experience difficulties after Fukaumi's death, and also another member, Tsuji's resignation. The factory was however active for almost two decades. Following the deaths of Kawahara and Tezuka in 1888 and 1889, and the inability to find people who could operate the new machines needed to modernize their production methods, the Seiji Kaisha Company closed in 1897 after which the impressed mark on blanks still may have lingered for several years. Seiji Kaisha marks on porcelain occurs at least as late as 1905.
