Large Antique Japanese Charger


A large antique Japanese charger with bird-and-flower decoration dating to the Meiji period (1868--1912). The central panel is painted with a songbirds surrounded by four large chrysanthemums. It is further framed by a wide ornamental band of peonies. Peonies are beloved in Japanese tradition where they represent beauty and wealth. The rim of the charger shows similar floral motifs painted in polychrome pigments. The back of the charger is graced by three segments of orange peonies with blue scrolling. This shallow bowl would look great in the middle of a dining room table or placed on a low table. Dimensions: 18.5 inches diameter x 4 inches deep Price: $1850.
