Pair Blue and White Chinese Jars Qing Dynasty Circa 1875
About the Item
This beautiful pair of blue and white Chinese porcelain jars was made circa 1875 during the reign of the Guangxu Emperor.
They are hand-painted in exquisite cobalt blue and are magnificent when on display.
Leafy peony scrolls float over the surface of the baluster-shaped jars.
The covers are similarly decorated, have a flared rim, and are surmounted by a rounded finial.
The vivid design continues the ancient Chinese tradition of decorating porcelain with peonies and scrolling leaves.
In Chinese tradition, peonies symbolize female beauty, royalty, and wealth and have long been admired for their bold size and beautiful colors.
Dimensions of the two jars: 8" tall by 5.5" diameter and 8" tall by 5.0" diameter
Condition: The current condition is excellent. One jar has a 2" hairline professionally, invisibly restored, and a small kiln burn spot on one cover (see second-to-last image).

Background of Chinese Blue and White Porcelain:
Since its creation in China in the 14th century, Chinese and overseas collectors have admired and appreciated blue and white porcelain. Popularized during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), blue and white porcelain has since become an icon of Chinese culture.
The blue pigment is derived from cobalt, which is painted on a white clay called kaolin; then, the decorated porcelain is fired in a kiln, which transforms the cobalt into a blue pigment and the kaolin to form the body of the porcelain.
