Pair Chinese Blue and White Covered Jars Hand Painted Qing Dynasty Circa 1880

About the Item

This pair of hand painted blue and white Chinese porcelain jars was made in the late Qing Dynasty in the Guangxu Era circa 1880. Each jar is expertly hand-painted in shades of cobalt blue, depicting a joyful scene of two songbirds singing to each other in a flower-filled garden. The birds are perched on branches amid scrolling vines above a large peony. In Chinese tradition, a scene with songbirds among flowers signifies happiness and good luck! On the reverse side of the jars, we see butterflies near flowers, which symbolizes love, as butterflies are known to love flowers. The decoration around each base features a band of plantain leaves, a traditional border decoration on Chinese porcelain since the Song Dynasty (960–1279). The covers are adorned with white flowers reserved on dark cobalt blue, and the finials are in the traditional form of foo lions. Dimensions: 18" tall x10.25" diameter at widest point x 8" diameter at base Condition: Excellent Price: $12,800 Background Since its creation in 14th century China, Chinese and overseas consumers have appreciated blue and white porcelain. Chinese blue and white porcelain production peaked during the 18th century when Emperor Qianlong and wealthy Qing customers patronized significant quantities of blue and white products. In the 19th century, the love for blue and white porcelains continued. In addition, in the late 19th century, the Aesthetic Movement in England further fanned the fire of "blue and white fever." That passion continues to this very day.
