Pair of Famille Rose Antique Cylindrical Brush Pots with Two-Verse Poem

About the Item

One of the pieces in this famille rose pair of brush pots bears an iron red square hallmark, as well as four columns of Chinese characters in a poem. The design that encircles the pots feature various flowers, two roosters on the ground on one and a pheasant or phoenix in flight and a nightingale on the other. Pots are painted in traditional Famille Rose colors of green, pink, white and yellow on porcelain with an overglaze. Beautiful. These are from the early 20th century. The two verses of the inscription or poem that accompanies the artwork reads, from right to left: Spring flowers resemble beautiful embroidery Summer lotus blossoms are elegant Autumn chrysanthemums blossom vigorously Winter plum flowers are freshly red The body is decorated with a vertical landscape of trees and a stump amid blossoming flowers. The scene includes two roosters roaming the landscape in search of insects or other food. One of the rims is gilded. Both pieces are in good condition. The pots measure 4 inches tall and 1.5 inches deep and wide.

  • Pair of Chinese Famille Rose Plates with Garden Scenes, C. 1900
    Located in Chicago, IL
During the 18th century, Europeans provided an eager market for Chinese export porcelain, especially the colorful and fanciful ware known as “famille rose.” Named for a palette of opaque overglaze enamels that favored roses and pinks, famille rose porcelain ware was crafted with the same technical virtuosity as imperial porcelain but designed for Western tastes. This pair of fine porcelain dishes is a beautiful example of famille rose, decorated with pastel enamels in a palette of purple, turquoise, and pink. The center of each plate is decorated with a calm scene of a woman and a young boy in a garden, surrounded by flowering plum branches and lingzhi fungi of immortality. The scene is bordered by an all-over purple fish...
