A rare Safavid dynasty (1501-1736) square Kubachi figural pottery tile C 1600

About the Item

A rare Safavid dynasty (1501-1736) square Kubachi figural pottery tile C 1600. Tile, with underglaze decoration painted in cobalt blue, green, ochre, and outlined in black, with a central lobed cartouche enclosing a figure holding a flower. Such tiles were made for the palaces or pavilions that Safavid rulers built throughout Iran. The corners of this tile are cut, which was done more often to place a small blue square tile between the decorated tiles. The glaze has some light wear and staining. Similar tiles are on display in the Islamic Art Gallery in the Musée du Louvre, Paris. They are attributed to Isfahan, between 1590-1630. Provenance of this tile is an important old German collection in the field of ceramics and glass. Part of their collection is now in the Museum für Angewandte Kunst Köln.
