About

Tall Martaban ware storage Jar Ming dynasty found in Laos. Floral Design.
Tall brown glazed storage jar found in Laos but manufactured in southern China most probably during the Ming Dynasty. The jar is in excellent condition with a floral design and lovely patinated brown glaze. There is a series of looped handles placed on the shoulder through which a rope would have been passed to secure a lid. These storage jars, which are found throughout Southeast Asia, where they were treasured and passed down over generations, are generally referred to as Martaban wares, the name owing to the transit port Marta Ban in Burma through which many such pieces were shipped. Assigning a specific date or specific place of origin is difficult. They were manufactured in any of a number of kilns in southern China; and some purportedly date to as early as the Tang Dynasty, but most can be attributed to the Yuan, Ming or even later periods. This particular piece was found in Laos and most likely dates from the Ming Dynasty. It is 38 inches tall and 20.5 inches in diameter.
