This remarkable Zebra Jug by Ardmore Ceramics is a true testament to the artistry of South Africa and a showcase of deep admiration for this noble animal. Hand-sculpted by the skilled hands of Somandla Ntshalintshali and brought to life with intricate details by the talented Zinhle Nene, this jug is a fusion of craftsmanship and creativity that captures the essence of the African savannah. Measuring an impressive 11 inches in height, with a length of 6 inches and a width of 13 inches, this jug is not just a functional piece but a magnificent work of art that will command attention in any setting. The sculpted zebra's head and neck, with its distinctive black and white stripes, and lifelike representation of the zebra's gentle yet majestic presence is a testament to the artists' profound admiration for this noble animal. Zinhle Nene was born in 1978 at Emmaus Hospital (KZN). She started school at Champagne Valley Primary School. She then went to Bonokuhle High School. She started working as an artist (painter) at Ardmore Ceramic at the age of 17 where she joined her sister, Jabu Nene, from the year 1995 until 2022. She was mentored by her sister Jabu. Zinhle says that she loves working as an artist mostly because it continues to teach her about nature. Being able to provide for her family keeps her going as she is the breadwinner at home. “Art means a lot to me, it makes me happy, I feel like flying when I’m doing it” says Zinhle. Ardmore Each Ardmore ceramic piece is a collaborative process. Some pieces begin with the thrower creating the shape on the wheel. Then the sculptor hand-forms the figurative elements in clay. Realistic animals and foliage take shape in skillful hands, before the finished piece is fired in the kiln and allowed to cool. The piece is then given to the painter who skillfully paints it. Upon completion, the piece is fired in the kiln again. The next step is the glazing. Once glazed, the piece is fired a final time and ready for sale.
