About the Item

A small rectangular wood table from Korea circa late 19th century of Joseon Dynasty. Known as Soban (small plate), this type of light weight table was used primarily as individual dining table to present and serve foods, but also as small desk, incense burner holder and altar table. Its small and low profile fits the traditional personal and portable use on the floor. The table on offer here is from Gangwon Do, a northeastern province from nowadays South Korea. Constructed in pine, it has a simple rectangular form supported by two plank feet with cutout design. The top surface has a slightly upturned perimeter with stylized corner and was finished in a red lacquer. Examining the table, it is an authentic period piece with mostly intact structure as well as original patina from long term use and care. For a nearly identical table, see item sinsu9532 in the collection of National Museum of Korea in Seoul. Another very similar table is illustrated on page 156, plate 72 of the book "Korean Arts of the Eighteenth Century: Splendor & Simplicity".
