A Chinese Huanghuali document box with baitong mounts Late Ming/Early Qing dynasty, 17th/18th century H. 6 x W. 34.8 x D. 17.5 cm Provenance: Property of a Dutch diplomat stationed in Beijing between 1962 and 1964 Dalbergia odorifera, or Chinese rosewood is one of the most valued wood-species in China, and is known as huali (??) or huanghuali (???). The highest quality furniture from the late Ming and early Qing dynasties was made of this wood and was only intended for the Emperor, nobility, or highest-ranking officials.

Rare Huanghuali Tabletop Cabinet Qing Dynasty 17th/18th C., Provenance. Well balanced and solid structured tabletop cabinet made from huanghuali, (Chinese Rosewood). It dates to the 17th/18th century Qing dynasty. The chest is composed of two framed doors, which when open, reveal two inner shelves. The lower shelf suspends a pair of drawers. The door panels and the chest are raised over aprons elaborately carved with classical Chinese foliate tendrils. The cabinet is fitted with baitong hardware.
