Delightful Japanese Bamboo Form Gold Lacquer Kazaridana Cabinet
About the Item
As part of our Japanese works of art collection we are delighted to offer this fine quality Meiji period 1868-1912, circa 1890 Kazaridana (display cabinet), the black lacquered hardwood cabinet stands upon a separate base formed as simulated bamboo, and follows this bamboo theme throughout the carcass, the multitude of display shelves further decorated with pierced open fretwork gallery’s and mouldings, this very useful cabinet houses storage compartments enclosed by three pairs of doors , a drawer and a rather unusual sliding panel , the door and drawer fronts decorated in sumptuous gold lacquer decoration upon well textured natural timber panels , the decoration includes egrets , geese and other native birds either wading or flying amidst lotus plants and lakeside foliage, these particular doors latch closed with super quality onlaid mixed metal decorated catches , another pair of doors finely decorated with a hanging floral display to one side and vase of flowers to the other and fitted silver handles, without doubt my favourite panel has to be the sliding door opulently decorated in gold lacquer upon a carved wicker ground highlighting a cockatiel sat upon his Perch whilst preening himself , the solid top of the cabinet ideal for displaying a large or heavy object and surmounted each side with bamboo shaped pediments, this is an extraordinary high quality display cabinet that would become the focal point to any Japanese themed room, whether in a traditional or contemporary setting , the panels are just exquisite !!
Condition report :
Lovely condition throughout, the black lacquer has been lovingly polished over the decades , now showing through on the bamboo high spots in places, and revealing the hard redwood timbers below, importantly the gold lacquer panels are in super condition !!

The sumptuous kazaridana of traditional display cabinet form, with several shelves and enclosed spaces for display and storage. The cabinet decorated all over in beautiful maki-e lacquer against a dense nashiji ground and inset with blue and white Arita porcelain plaques. The front of the cabinet of asymmetric design, with two open display shelves at staggered heights, and several doors enclosing storage areas of various shapes and sizes, including one hinged corner door, two pairs of sliding doors, and one pair of hinged doors opening to reveal a rounded inset corner shelf. A pair of drawers below complete the cabinet. All supported on a separate tall fitted stand. The corner door decorated with a bold scene of a samurai warrior fighting a demon. This most likely depicts the warrior Watanabe no Tsuna battling the demon Ibaraki-doji at Rashomon gate, in which Watanabe no Tsuna attempts to help a young girl return home, carrying her on his back, only for the girl to turn into a demon, which he then must fight. The top pair of sliding doors with a scene of a man playing the sho, a Japanese mouth organ, along the banks of a river with a waterfall in the background. The bottom pair of sliding doors with a waterfall scene on one side, while a scholar lounges with his attendants on the other. The pair of hinged doors finely decorated with a pair of fully armored samurai. The two drawers wonderfully decorated in the kodaiji style with a stream of rushing water and various plants and grasses. The cabinet is decorated in the round, with the top, sides, and base of the cabinet decorated with various scenes of flowers and birds, and inset with blue and white Arita porcelain plaques in the form of traditional fan.
