Late 19th Century Shanxi Coffer Table

About the Item

A late 19th century antique coffer table from Shanxi province, China, with excellent patina and beautiful original colour which we had left untouched. The two drawers have relief carvings of cloud motifs, and they pull out completely to reveal a hidden compartment below. The fixed panel below the drawers (housing the hidden compartment), the side carvings and the bottom apron have carvings of clouds & tendril-like patterns. The long iron pulls on the inner part of both drawers are original and they can be latched onto a ring in the middle, providing a simple way to secure them by adding a lock through the middle metal ring. Both ring pulls are replacements. There is a burn mark and slight depression on the left side of the fixed panel and the apron.
