Late 19th Century Shanxi Coffer Table

About the Item

This antique coffer table from Shanxi has exceptional patina, harmonious proportions and pleasing overall aesthetics. On the drawers are cast iron handles with beautifully carved chrysanthemum flower backings, and iron studs framing the perimeter. On the left drawer, there was a repair done before on the raised border, you can see an inverted triangular-shaped piece. On the right drawer, there are four slim leaf-shaped metal pieces securing the bottom border which had come loose. This was a common method of repair: using metal pieces to hold loose parts together, and it was also used for the repairs of chairs and wood buckets. There is a “secret” compartment behind the fixed panels which is accessible when you pull out the two drawers. The table top is 106cm long, the length at the bottom is 82cm.
