About the Item

This workbench was used by lacquerware craftsmen from the Taisho to Showa periods. It is believed that this workbench was used when applying lacquer to wooden vessels. Perhaps the lacquer was applied on this workboard, or the amount of lacquer was adjusted by spreading it on the workboard. As a result, the beautiful contrast between the vermilion and black colors spreads throughout the piece, making it look like a work of art. Although it is small in size, the unevenness of the surface creates a three-dimensional effect that fascinates those who look at it. When hung on the wall, it creates an atmosphere like a dripping abstract painting, and is very attractive as interior decor. In addition, the back side is layered with black lacquer over and over again, creating a layer of lacquer, with the center raised like a bank. This state is proof of the enormous amount of work done by lacquerware craftsmen, and you can feel the depth of their skill and passion. Here is a unique texture born from time that cannot be imitated by modern art. No two workbenches used by lacquerware craftsmen are the same, and each one has a different look, which is interesting.
