A Exceptional Bronze and Mixed-Metal Charger Depicting a Scene from the Suikoden
Meiji era
The lobed charger finely worked in takazōgan with gold, silver, shakudō, and shibuichi on a dark bronze ground, depicting a dramatic riverside encounter from the Suikoden (Water Margin). Under blossoming plum trees, the warrior monk Roshishin strides forcefully down a rocky slope, wielding a monk’s staff in pursuit of a fleeing figure, possibly a bandit or corrupt official. Below, a sage-like elder sits calmly in a boat, holding a vessel of chrysanthemums, embodying inner peace amidst the unfolding action. The contrasting segment of the design inset with a panel of blooming chrysanthemums beside a meandering stream, scattered with flying birds. The wide border with lobed rim decorated in low relief with butterflies and mythical animals among dense arabesque scrollwork.
The reverse plain with a recessed foot.
