Japanese Bronze Dragon Water Basin, Mizubachi, Meiji Period, 19th Century

About

A 19th century Japanese Meiji Period bronze water basin, called a mizubachi, with archaistic designs and a powerfully cast dragon handle, all supported on a high base designed as crashing waves. The basin is cast with an archaistic Chinese design, featuring a leiwen (rolling thunder, or Greek key fret) border around the rim and a shallow spout to one side. A series of lapettes with archaistic confronting beasts upon a dense diaper ground decorate the shoulder. The dragon handle is robustly cast, with a strong sense of movement and power. The basin sits upon an integral pedestal base cast as high, crashing waves. The basin with a beautiful chocolate brown patina with hints of red.
