Ikeda Masuo ( 池田 満寿夫 ) was a pluridisciplinary artist : painter, movie-maker, writer, ceramist, metalworker, illustrator and sculptor. The prefecture of Nagano has its own museum dedicated to him : the Ikeda Masuo Art Museum. His work has been exhibited in the world's most prestigious art museums such as the MoMA and the Smithsonian.
Ikeda's artistic thinking, which had been focused solely on Western art history, changed after he began to make ceramics and metalwork. Having previously focused on Western painting and sculpture, Ikeda began to take a renewed interest in Japanese Jomon and Yayoi earthenware, Raku tea bowls, and Oribe. Influenced by Sotatsu Tawaraya and Korin Ogata, he began to use gold and silver colors in his work.
