18th Century Six-Fold Japanese Screen "Tokaido"

About

There are two screens, which are a pair. Each has its own listing and photos. This is a beautiful antique six-fold Japanese screen. The subject is "Tokaido", which features famous locations between Tokyo and Kyoto. The design is beautifully detailed with buildings, people and animals, among gold leaf clouds. There are people carrying various items, samurai walking in armor, people crossing bridges, standing at temples and riding horses. In various areas, there are small paper labels which indicate the location. In various areas on the screens are Lake Biwa, Mt. Fuji and towns such as Otsu and Zeze, along the "East Coast Road". It is mounted with a brocade border and has a black lacquer frame, with decorative metal hardware at the edges and corners of the screen. Traditional patterned backing paper on the back of the screen.
