Chinese Export Reverse Glass Painting, 19th century portrait of a young Napoleon Bonaparte; 13 1/2 x 9 1/2 in., frame 16 1/2 x 12 1/4 in. Reverse glass pictures became fashionable in the 18th century. Glass panels were sent from Europe to China by sea, where they were painted to order, framed, and then returned to the West for inclusion in Chinese-inspired interiors.
