Antique Chinese Export Qing Dynasty Reverse Painting on Glass of Children 1860

About the Item

A very fine antique Qing dynasty Chinese export reverse painting on glass, circa 1860. The painting depicts two children from the Imperial court, wearing very finely embroidered robes, one child is leaning on a marble topped table & holding a pomegranate aloft and the other is holding a fan. In China the pomegranate is widely represented in many forms of art symbolizing fertility and abundance and a blessed future. The fan is considered a status symbol particularly as the early aristocracy highly valued fans made of feathers and extravagantly embroidered, therefore due to their costly nature such fans were a symbol of wealth and authority. So, in essence this painting represents & celebrates the idea of fertility, wealth and status. The painting is very finely executed indeed and is housed in the original hardwood frame and has the original decorative hanging hook to the top. Condition is excellent, there is no damage or restoration noted. Provenance, From a fine private collection of Chinese Art, San Francisco, California
