Japanese Antique Brilliant Colors Ten Woodblock Fan Prints Immediately Frameable

About the Item

Japanese antique brilliant colors woodblock FAN prints, set of ten (10), Meiji period, #3. Immediately frameable. These exuberant woodblock Fan prints and designs were created to advertise and boost Japan's 19th century modernization and transformation. These designs could have been ordered at that time, printed, and then placed on Japanese hand fans for resale or souvenirs. (see last photo) They have a definite appeal to westerners and help celebrate Japan's beauty and splendor as it moves toward western modernization. They were printed on rice paper in a 9.2" x 9.5" format and were creatively designed by a variety of period 19th century Japanese artisans as most are signed. Rescued from a rare original book, each woodblock print was inserted and bound at the book's spine by strings. You can still see evidence of this on each as they were bound as one volume- so you may notice normal and original foxing- toned areas from appropriate age.....after all these prints are more than 100 years old. The publication of these prints in the late 1800s-1900s was a very interesting time in Japanese print making, when the old traditional ways of wood block printing were giving way to new western print making technologies such as lithography and photo mechanical printing. Artists and printers in Japan were losing their living and decided to pursue western markets by reformulating their compositions. Heavily influenced by western innovations, they incorporated light and shade into their art along with Western concepts of perspective and symbols of progress.
