Japanese Edo Six-Panel Kano Screen Emperor Garden Terrace

Early 18th century Japanese Tokugawa Edo period six-panel kano screen depicting the Emperor in conversation on a garden terrace. Crafted from ink and natural color pigments on gold leaf squares set in a lacquered frame. The genre is based on the Chinese book Dijian Tushuo written by The Ming scholar Zhang Juzheng. Published in 1572 and presented to emperor Shenzong. Teikan-zu were painted by Kano school artists for shogun patrons. This screen shows beautifully with old repairs and losses. The vibrant greens and blue color stand out boldly on the gold leaf ground. From an estate in San Francisco, CA. Older provenance label on verso.
