About the Item

A fine and lyrical Japanese hanging scroll depicting a flock of sparrows in mid-flight, rendered with fluid brushwork and subtle ink tones. The birds seem to dance across the surface with vitality and lightness, exemplifying the expressive spirit of the Nanga (Southern School) painting tradition. This work is by Himejima Chikugai, a noted painter and former samurai of the Fukuoka domain, who studied under Murata Toho and became a prominent figure in the Osaka literati painting circle. Known for his poetic sensitivity and refined technique, Chikugai’s art bridges the natural beauty of the Japanese landscape with classical Chinese literati ideals. The scroll likely dates to the late Meiji or Taishō period (1900–1928) and reflects Chikugai’s mature style: graceful, contemplative, and rich in movement. His legacy continued through his students, including Mizuta Chikubo and Akamatsu Unrei. • Age: Early 20th century (c. 1900–1928) • Artist: Himejima Chikugai (also known as Jun, Shijun, Kaizō, Genyo, Chōtō) • Materials: Ink and color on silk, original signed wooden box included • Dimensions: • Overall: H 195 × W 55 cm (76.6 × 21.6 in) • Image only: H 123 × W 42 cm (48.3 × 16.5 in) • Weight: 440 g (0.97 lb), with box: 850 g (1.9 lb) • Condition: Some light foxing and patina on the mounting.
