Kiyoshi Saito Signed Limited Edition Japanese Woodblock Print Steady Gaze Paris

About the Item

A beautifully and darkly composed woodblock print by famed Japanese printmaker Kiyoshi Saito. Many consider Saito to be one of the most important, if not the most important, contemporary Japanese printmakers of the 20th century. This print, which is titled "Steady Gaze, Paris (A)" features strong colours, exceptional wood grain texture, and a bold, striking design. It is from a limited series of prints (and some of his most coveted works) that Saito did based on his travels in France, Paris in particular. The print is signed in white ink by Saito within the image. The print was also originally titled ("Steady Gaze, Paris (A)"), dated (1960), and numbered (from an edition of 120) in pencil by the artist in the lower margin but this information was covered up and obscured by the previous owner. As a result, we have re-framed the print and had the margins, though existing, matted out. A very rare and scarce early work. Would be a great addition to any modern Japanese or Asian print collection or eye-catching Stand-alone work once framed. Frame dimensions: 25" high, 20.5" wide, .75" deep Viewable image: 19.5" high, 14.5" wide The work has been newly matted and framed with UV protection non-glare matte glass. This print can be found in the Cleveland Museum of Art and the Honolulu Museum of Art Collections. Saito's work has been exhibited extensively and can be found in galleries and museums throughout the world including: Achenbach Foundation, Palace of the Legion of Honor, San Francisco Art Institute of Chicago Cincinnati Art Museum Fukushima Prefectural Museum of Art Kanagawa Prefectural Museum Los Angeles County Museum of Art Miami Art Museum Museum of Fine Arts, Boston Museum of Modern Art, New York City National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo New York Public Library Philadelphia Museum of Art.

A beautifully composed woodblock print by famed Japanese printmaker Kiyoshi Saito. Many consider Saito to be one of the most important, if not the most important, contemporary Japanese printmakers of the 20th century. This print, which is titled "Daitoku-ji Kyoto (D)" is from a series of Kyoto temple images that Saito created. The woodblock print features strong, contrasting colors, beautiful wood grain, and a complex design - the cross-shaped walkway pattern which is highlighted by the small precisely placed stones is repeated on the temple wall. The wood grain in the yard, temple walls and sky add another layer of compositional depth. The print is signed in black ink and stamped/sealed in red within the image It is likely titled, dated (1960), and numbered (from a limited edition of 150) in pencil by the artist in the lower margin but hidden below the mat. • 1960 Big Boys, Woodblock Print by Tomio Kinoshita, Japan
    By Tomio Kinoshita
    Located in Point Richmond, CA
Tomio Kinoshita (1923 – 2014) Big Boys, 1960 Woodblock print Image size: 32.75 high by 22 inches wide (83 by 56 cm) Paper size: 35.5 high by 23.75 inches wide (90 by 60.3 cm) Signed: in pencil lower right, Tomio Kinoshita Titled: in pencil at lower left Edition: 30/50 Condition: Very good The woodblock for this large print was carved in 1958, just three years after Kinoshita’s began creating woodblocks. This print was signed and dated in 1960, but not numbered; prints were also pulled from this block in the 1970s, so it must have been one of more popular images. One of his students has written, “As time progressed further, the postwar era saw improvements in nutrition, and children became taller and heavier than in the past, but their lack of physical exercise and severely inferior physical abilities became a social problem; this is ironically depicted in Big Boys.” In 1963, Kinoshita told him that he had just finished pulling a print of this image in response to a request from Unichi Hiratsuka...
