Chinese Boxwood Auspicious Guardian Two Lions Sculptures

About the Item

The Vintage Chinese boxwood Carving of Auspicious Sitting Lions Pair is a remarkable example of traditional Chinese craftsmanship that carries significant cultural and symbolic meaning. In Chinese tradition, lions are symbolic of strength, protection, and power. Known as shizi (狮子), they are often depicted in pairs as guardians, commonly placed at the entrance of temples, homes, and palaces to ward off evil spirits and bring good fortune. The pair of lions, especially in sitting positions, symbolizes protection and balance. They are also associated with prosperity and success, as lions are seen as protectors of wealth. Typically, the male lion is depicted with a paw resting on a ball, symbolizing power and authority over the world. Female Lion: The female lion is often shown with a cub under her paw, symbolizing nurturing, protection, and the cycle of life. Yin and Yang: The lion pair can also represent the balance of Yin (female) and Yang (male), bringing harmony and balance to the environment in which they are placed. The lions are likely depicted in a sitting position, with detailed carvings showing their muscular build, expressive faces, and intricate fur. This posture reinforces their role as protective guardians.
