Important chinese terracotta sculpture of a horse, China Northern Wei dynasty
About the Item
Terracotta mingqi with white slip and polychromy, representing a horse with its finery.
Very good to perfect condition.
Please note that all ancient Chinese terracotta sculptures were placed in the graves of the deceased to accompany them in their afterlife. They were subsequently removed and may therefore show wear, missing polychromy or even restoration.
What I like best about this horse is the expression in its eyes that the painter was able to capture with a few strokes : despite its majestic appearance, the horse looks sad, resigned to having to put up with this finery for the parade.
A thermoluminescence test accompanies this sculpture.
